What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese art of self defense developed by Morihei Ueshiba ("O Sensei") in the early twentieth century.

Aikido involves redirecting the power and energy of an attack, resulting in the attacker being unbalanced and subsequently either projected (thrown) or immobilized (pinned). It is the attacker's own force and momentum which ultimately neutralizes the aggression.

Aikido Practice

Picture
Aikido can be practiced and learned by almost anyone — large, small, men, women, young or old — in a class together! Beginners and advanced students often practice together. Because the techniques are so powerful and some have the potential to cause pain or injury, practice must be conducted in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. Everyone on the mat is there to learn and help their partners learn and improve. Practice should be serious yet joyful, energetic yet supportive. It is each student's responsibility to bring positive, constructive energy to onto the mat.

To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.
